What are the reasons you have been avoiding seeing the dentist?
Dental Phobias??

Scared of the dentist? You are not alone. The latest research shows that ten percent of Americans or roughly 25 million people avoid the dentist completely.

Dental phobia is higher among the female population. A scientific paper concluded that the characteristics of a phobic patient were that they were female, they suffered from more decay, did not like their smiles, and they had a negative attitude toward dentists.

One of the complaints was that the dentist made them feel guilty for being afraid of the visit or that they did not take the patient worries seriously.

The benefits of Twilight sleep are several: RELAXED visit being the most important. Also more can be accomplished and the appointment seems so much shorter. Twilight sleep is safe and affordable when compared to general anesthesia at a hospital.

For our IV sedation procedures. We use Monitored Anesthesia Care(MAC): pulse oximetry and intermittent blood pressure readings. IV sedation is safer than oral premedication because it can be titrated closely. And it is possible to pick up systemic problems the patient is not aware of.

Physical diseases that aggravate dental phobia
or are connected.

Aubrey Nye is a Neuro Linguistic Programming consultant. She has a wonderful site self improvement site that includes "sedative hypnotic" tapes. They are to help patients with dental phobia and other phobias.

More important than dental implants, cavities, gum disease, or cosmetic dentistry is oral cancer. Dental phobics aremore at risk for bad outcome from oral cancer because they do not go to the dentist often enough.

This is the stress reduction protocol that we use in our practice. It is based on Dr. Stanley Malamed's work who literally wrote the book on dental anesthesia. Your understanding and following of it will help make your visits go smoothly.

Recognize anxiety. Let Dr. Starkey know how you feel about going to the dentist. Gain the cooperation of the dental staff. Receive Pre-medication the night before appointment or one hour before appointment. Schedule appointments in the morning to minimize waiting time to reduce anticipatory anxiety.

Sedation during the appointment. We like to start with relaxing gas for some patients along with twilight sleep because it gives the patient adequate oxygen during treatment and further relaxes patient prior to the start of the IV.

Adequate pain control during appointment. Sort out length of appointment needed. Post operative pain and or anxiety control. For medical risk patients we do a medical consult prior to dental therapy.
